Tree of Life

This window is at Keynsham Health Centre, and was commissioned to celebrate the continual use of the site for healthcare purposes since 1837.

The design uses the shape of the tree to give an upward, positive feeling to the doctor’s waiting room, along with the palette of rainbow colours as background.

The roots of the tree symbolise the history of the site and the old Keynsham Hospital is depicted at the base, along with lettering and an ammonite which is an emblem of the town, in traditional glass paint.

The use of reamy clear glass for the tree as focal point against a coloured background is unusual, but enables the tree to stand out, with the folds in the glass resembling the texture of bark, and allows a brighter, lighter feel to the window, which was necessary in this indoor setting with lower light levels.

The window is made up of four separate panels, which are encapsulated within double glazing just inside the entrance to the Health Centre.

Due to the size of the top two sections, external steel bars were used to add strength: pieces of copper wire are soldered on to the lead and then wrapped around the bar to inhibit movement. The horizontal lines become a part of the design.
